Higher Challenge Wilderness Adventures

When you think of Higher Challenge, lots of things come to mind: sailing across Nipew Lake with 10 canoes tied together, long portages, trying to catch a pancake for breakfast, arm wrestling, Slaps or Capture the Flag. Hiking a mountain ridge with a heavy pack and drinking from a crystal clean stream coming right out of the rock.

Campfires, stories, singing, food -- simple things. And best of all, the friends you make, because in Higher Challenge we do things together -- and we never quit.

At the end of the summer, when you see the geese flying, you have the urge to find a a canoe, to load your packs and continue the adventure. Higher Challenge is so much more than a camp -- it is an unforgettable life experience -- and it's happening again this summer. Come join us!

Since 1993, Higher Challenge has been offering northern teens unique out-tripping adventures in northern Saskatchewan and western Alberta. Operated by Northern Canada Evangelical Mission (NCEM), it is the goal of HCWA to offer camps that stretch the whole person -- physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. In a program led by trained, experienced Christian leaders, God is presented as a personal God whose plan and purpose for all races, ages and cultures is given in the Bible and demonstrated by His Son, Jesus Christ.

With safety as the governing principle, fear is faced and conquered and lifetime skills are developed as team members find the freedom to try and succeed in a program geared for success. All food and camp equipment is provided -- the camper only needs to bring clothing and personal gear.

HCWA activities may include backpacking, canoe tripping, white-water paddling, rock climbing and rappel, survival training and lots of other great activities, all done in some of the best country God has made!

If you are ready for a summer with an edge -- if you want to get "unbored" -- apply soon to HCWA ... space is limited! HCWA are coed camps for teens 13-19.

Trip Descriptions

Our Saskatchewan trips all take place northwest of La Ronge, SK in the Canadian Shield country of the Churchill River system. These are canoe trips, so plan on paddling and portaging in beautiful lake country, great fishing and some of the best wilderness camping around. Canoeing lessons are taught en route. Other activities may include a cliff jump, rock climbing and/or rappel, swimming, and playing on some rapids. Trip #2 will be a bit longer and more strenuous. All trips are led by experienced leaders.

Our Alberta trips can have a lot of variety. We often start or end with a day of paintball and swimming. We hike in the Canadian Rockies west of Nordegg, Alberta. The canoeing portion we do on the beautiful North Saskatchewan River. Activities can include wilderness backpacking, rock climbing and/or rappel, river canoeing, survival training, and non-technical mountaineering. The six-day camp is especially for those who haven't had a lot of experience in wilderness camping. The Ultimate Trip is for veteran campers who are looking for a challenge and want to develop leadership skills. Most of what we do on HCWA is included in the Ultimate Challenge trip. All of these trips are led by experienced leaders.

This summer Higher Challenge is adding an Oldtimers Camp. That doesn't mean you have to be old to go on it, but it is geared for campers who have outgrown our teens camps, yet long to get a paddle back in the water, are starving for Higher Challenge grub, and love those campfires, the singing, the stories and the friends. We'll go back to places like Surf City, Otter Rapids, and paddle down the Churchill to Stanley Mission. There is not top-end age limit, but we are looking for adults who still have that sense of adventure and look back with fondness to their paddling days. Not too many portages, but lots of good times await us. This will be a five-day trip and we are keeping the fees low, so you can go. See you on the river!

Perhaps one of the best things about Higher Challenge is the way we can connect to God in the wilderness setting. All HCWA trips are led by Christian leaders who really care and have gone through extensive screening to become part of the leadership team. We teach God as a personal God who has revealed Himself to us through His Son, Jesus Christ. HCWA leaders will teach principles based on the Bible and Christian living. At Higher Challenge, we promote no specific church and recognize the freedom of spiritual choice of the individual.

Please note that this year our forms will include a section dealing with confirmation of funding. In the past, campers have come with an assumption that they would have funding, but it didn't come through. As a not-for-profit ministry, we operate on a slim margin, so we need to have camp fees paid. If you are going on a trip, it is the camper's responsibility to procure funding before the trip leaves, or at least have the funding agency sign off on your form that your fees will be paid. We reserve the right to cancel any of these trips if we don't have minimal numbers for them. Camper/staff ratios will be kept at or near 3/1. To secure a place on any of these camps, a non-refundable deposit of $50.00 is to be paid at least 2 weeks prior to trip departure. Complete HCWA Guidelines and Policies and Application forms will be made available through the NCEM website.
